Masaryk's hat

The sculpture serves as a commemoration of the first Czechoslovak president, Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, with a playful nod to his most notable fashion accessory—the hat that consistently adorned him. This project joyfully celebrates this iconic fashion piece, transforming it into a spatial object that engages with the plaza and its visitors. The hat evolves into a pavilion, inviting people to explore its interior and gaze at the sky through its open top. Symbolically, the hat, a prominent fashion element of early 20th-century gentlemen, represents values such as good manners, education, and elegance—values that Masaryk embodied and that the university continues to uphold. The sculpture, manufactured through digital fabrication methods in glass fibre-reinforced concrete, merges modern technology with artistic expression, creating a distinctive and meaningful presence that pays tribute to the enduring legacy of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk.
